John 5

The Jesus book.

39You diligently study[c] the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

The Bible has been called many things:  “words of life”, “a rule and guide for right living”, “a love letter from God”, “a good book”, “the message”.

Bible study is good.  Don’t get me wrong.  That is exactly what we are attempting to get folks to do by promoting this blog and reading plan.  Dive into the word.  Study it.  Learn it.  Memorize it.  Let it sink in and live it out.

But don’t think for one second that all that will bring you one step closer to salvation and eternity.  A good book…a message…a love letter…or a standard for living has no power for eternity outside of Jesus.  It’s his book.  About him in every page.  He is the true source of life and the very reason for each and every word of the scripture.  Outside of Jesus…it’s just ink and paper.

It’s annoying when one flaunts a superior knowledge of the scripture.  He or she is missing the point.  Let us boast in what we know of Jesus.  That he alone provides salvation and eternity.  Let us boast in him.  He truly holds the very “words of life”.  So dig in deep…but don’t miss the point of it all.

Jesus.  Come to him for life…life abundant…life eternal.
