NT Quest Day 218 - John 3

Scripture:

John 3:

27 To this John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ[j] but am sent ahead of him.’ 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.

Observation:

John does what John does.  He points to Jesus.  This isn’t about John after all…It’s about the Christ.  Jesus must become greater while John fades.

Application:

I love the illustration John uses.  When the bridegroom arrives the friend who attends to him is full of joy.  It’s about the bridegroom after all…the attention is not for the attendant.

In effect John is saying…”let me introduce you to the reason we are here…let me introduce you to the one who is far greater than me”

We would be wise to do the same.  Make introductions.  Point to the Savior.  Take the attention off ourselves and shine the spotlight on Him!

Prayer:

God…I am not the Christ.  Help me not to steal his rightful place.  Help me to point to Him alone.  I have no light of my own…but only that which you shine through me.  Use your Spirit in me to be that light…to show others the reason we are here…the one who is greater!  I pray in Jesus name, Amen.
